YOUTHS from a settlement in Wewak known for producing home brewed liquor voluntarily surrendered their equipment to police yesterday.

Wewak Basis settlers from Murik Lakes in East Sepik marched to the station with four gas cylinders and other accessories assuring police that they would stop producing the liquor known as steam.

“It is true that we have been brewing and selling steam but today we promise that it is now a thing of the past,” youth leader Vincent Kaka told a packed crowd outside the Wewak police station.

“We are now scared of tougher laws being passed by parliament for home brew and marijuana and would like to give up all these activities.

“We solemnly promise that we will not go back this activity and if anyone from outside comes into our community to conduct this business we will report him to police to clear our name.”
