The National, Friday January 10th, 2013
MORE than 2,000 young members of the United Church in the Highlands region are attending their annual convention in Nipa, Southern Highlands.
They wear different uniforms to show the provinces, districts and local level governments they hail from.
Women from the local Catholic church chanted in their local language words of appreciation for the hosting of the convention at the Nipa Station.
Young church members involved in illegal activates confessed in public their mistakes and vowed that they had changed their ways.
Other Christian denominations came out in support of the youths.
Nipa North circuit minister Rev John Aga said it was the fourth youth convention in the region.
He said Nipa-Kutubu district had been negatively associated with criminal activities in particular the harassing of travellers from Hela.
“A big gathering to pray and say sorry to Hela and shake hands will eventuate sometimes this year,” he said.
Nipa-Kutubu MP Jeffery Komal gave K5,000 and a cow towards the regional youth convention hosted in his electorate.
“My desire is to promote spiritual activity in the district. I want such spiritual development activities to continue to change the mindset of the people,” he said.
He said the Government was working in partnership with churches and he would make sure that all churches were recognised and supported.
