MORE than 20 youths have been awarded certificates for attending workshops on domestic violence and trauma healing.

The workshop was facilitated by Australian consultant Prof Judy Atkinson at the invitation of PNG against Violence and Women Arise PNG.

The youths came from different backgrounds; some grew up as street children but are now employed while others have the passion to create change.

The first training was conducted by the PNG Red Cross Society, the second was by the Investment Promotion Authority and the last was by the Community Development Department.

Lydia Kailap, who administers the PNG against Violence Facebook page, said the aim of the workshop was to establish a strategic plan to tackle domestic violence in a holistic approach.

“We are working on the plan but it should be made known to the government and the public when it is completed,” she said.

“The programme would have not eventuated if we had not received funding assistance from Linda Babao, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, Health Minister Michael Malabag and Air Niugini.”

Babao said she was happy the programme saw domestic violence and trauma as a societal problem.
