MANY crimes are caused by youths who should be trained and guided to pursue worthwhile things to live better lives, an official says.
Chief executive director of the Mapex Training Institute Marcus Palem Kara was at the opening of the Mt Hagen branch to help those people who dropped out of the education system and roaming the streets.
He called for cooperation between the young people, their parents, the Government and institutions such as Mapex, to give this group a second chance in life.
Kara said Mapex was one of the institutions taking in school dropouts and helping them pursue better things to benefit themselves in the long run.
Mapex now has 10 branches around the country.
“The aim is to give these young people a second chance in life by equipping them with skills and knowledge,” Kara said.
He urged the Government to do more to address the plight of this group of young people.
Mapex has in the past four years trained young people from the streets and villages.
“We should train and equip the youths so that they can live their own lives instead of involve in petty crimes, drugs and homebrew,” Kara said. He said youths had a place to live in a society and they had to be well equipped with knowledge and skills.
