Youths spread Word through volleyball
The National – Monday, July 11, 2011
A NEW volleyball association in PNG is preparing to make an impact in its second attempt to impress at the regional and national tournaments this year.
The Morobe Anglican Volleyball Association (MAVA), born out of the Anglican church youth ministry in Lae, has grown from the six teams formed from three local parishes in Lae.
The association has attracted players from within the city and there are now 16 men’s and 12 women’s teams competing.
MAVA games coordinator Nigel Siunabae said when they made their debut last year, they faced their strongest challenges with the U21 team almost making it to the finals.
He said with the rise in the number of players, the association was likely to field strong teams to take on their more established rivals in the Northern Zone regional challenge in Madang and the national volleyball championship in Port Moresby at the end of the year.
However, the association is still seeking sponsorship from business houses in Lae.
The association hosts its matches at the All Souls Anglican parish at Top Town.
It has registered teams from East Taraka, Backroad, Bumbu, Kamkumung and Labu Tale.
Siunabae said MAVA was a ministry programme for the church to involve youths to evangelise through sports, so time is spared before the start of matches for devotion and prayers.
