POLICE and community leaders in Central Kagua watched as youths burned homebrew kits on Christmas Eve in a campaign to fight crime.

The campaign was to promote unity and peace in the trouble-prone Kagua-Erave district. It included the surrendering of homebrew-making equipment.

Maita Yawi Palasi said Kagua-Erave had a lot of potential to invest in economic activities but were held back by the continuous tribal fights.

“One of the main causes is homebrew and marijuana,” he said.

“Therefore Kagua-Erave needs to eradicate the consumption of homebrew and marijuana.

“We must stop going to battle fields and killing our own tribesmen in our own districts and provinces like enemies. The rest of the country is progressing in development. It’s insane,” Yawi said.

Former district administrator Paul Pawa appealed to the people to do away with drugs and fighting.

“We cannot develop our district and province using guns and bullets,” Pawa said.

Pawa said the district is the second most densely populated district in the Highlands. Police Constable Ben Kevin and Sergeant  Kenneth Mambo attended the event.
