Zurenuoc recognises Kavo as governor
The National, Wednesday February 18th, 2015
SPEAKER Theo Zurenuoc has recognised Havila Kavo as an MP and Gulf Governor pending the outcome of his court appeal against conviction for misuse of public funds.
He clarified his position on Kavo’s status in a short statement before Parliament resumed yesterday and said there should be no more comments on the matter as it was before the court.
Zurenuoc said his legal advice was that Kavo had invoked his right to appeal against his conviction and sentence and was granted leave by the Supreme Court to appeal on Jan 23.
“Until such time as the argument is determined, the chair is satisfied that the Governor for Gulf Province, Havila Kavo, is still an MP and entitled to perform his official role and functions in the chamber and Parliament precincts,” he said.
“The chair is satisfied that this matter is sub-judice and before the court, and rules that no more questions and statements be allowed, on this matter while the matter is pending before the court.”
