LOCALS from Rai Coast in Madang were rescued by Ramu NiCo vessel mv Carrie after being adrift in Astrolabe Bay for a few hours because their boat ran out of fuel.
Captain of mv Carrie Charles Buai said the vessel’s crew noticed distress calls from the passengers as they were approaching Madang.
There were 13 passengers on the boat, including a child and an infant.
The Ramu NiCo vessel took  the passengers on board the ship and towed the boat into Madang.
The locals were from Gawar village near Rai Coast Secondary and were intending to travel into Madang.
Buai warned that small boat operators must always ensure that they carried enough fuel to avoid such dangers.
He said the sea was quite calm and the wind was picking up from land, pushing the dingy further out to the open sea when it was spotted.
