Airport ready for opening

The upgraded Girua Airport in Northern will be completed and ready for opening soon, National Airports Corporation chief operating officer Sylvester Kenatsi says.
Kenatis told The National that Girua was one of the projects under the Civil Aviation Development Improvement Programme (CADIP funded by Asian Development Bank.
“The runway is basically completed; the terminal will be ready for opening soon,” he said.
“The airport which is being refurbished by China Habour Engineering Company has progressed well.
“We are basically waiting for the actual completion and then the Government will open that together with the other projects that are done under the CADIP.”
Kenatsi said Goroka was another airport project under CADIP and the work was mainly on the terminal building.
He added that the Goroka airport terminal building was also progressing well and there were other projects in the pipeline.
“Kagamuga Airport in Mt Hagen was completed and opened last year and we are looking forward to Girua and Goroka,” Kenatsi said.
“Goroka is scheduled for opening this year and government wants to open all those airports at the same time.
“There are other programmes that have been streamlined including airport fencing, runway extension and terminal buildings.”
Meanwhile, commenting on the Nadzab Airport in Lae, Kenatisi said the project funded by Japanese International Corporation Agency had already been defined, the loan signed and the consultation has already been mobilised at Jackson Airport.
“We are in control of the Government projects, we are the only ones to tell the public on the progress,” Kenatsi said.
“The Nadzab project is scheduled for completion in 2021.”
He said the projects would be delivered according to the schedules and on time.
