FAB Catering is employing young people from City Mission, says Alice Futter, the director and head of staff training.
“The catering shop is basically a kaibar shop that serves all different works of life,” Futter said.
“We have some healthy food, some homemade food and some local food  – all at an affordable price.
The catering company is owned by two women – 51 per cent by a local woman and 49 per cent by South African Futter who has been in the country for more than four years.
“I run the operational side of things and we blend in well,” says Futter.
The company opened its first business last September at Seven-Mile.
After nine months into business, they won a contract to operate at the Nature Park in Gerehu for two years.
“We just opened six weeks ago and are happy for the opportunity to serve locals and tourists who will be visiting the park,” she said.
“It is a new challenge and we look forward for it.
“We currently employ 15 local staffs and train them as we go along. They had no basic training for this industry but are very keen learners. Safety in the kitchen is the first priority,” Futter said.
“We have a local who buys vegetables at the main Gordon market and re-sells to us.
“I have been in the cooking and training industry for 20 years.” She said it was not about just employing the local youth but helping them to become someone in future.
“Papua New Guinea is a good country with a lot of growth potential and partnering with local people can give a wider customer range in terms of business,” she said.
