Supporters of a candidate contesting the Usino-Bundi seat in Madang began cleaning in Madang town last Friday while in camp near the counting venue.
“Since last Friday, 128 men cleaned up Madang town while waiting for the Usino-Bundi open count,” candidate Vincent Kumura said.
The theme of their camp is “Carpe Diem or Seize the Day.”
They embarked on the clean-up programme as part of the team’s community service to the town.
The have been cleaning around the town from 6am-8am daily except on Saturday.
Kumura, who is also the sponsor of the cleaning up, said they started from the Bukbuk area of Newtown and along Malabor Street, past Newtown Plaza and down the main Modilon road to town.
“On Monday, they collected all the rubbish along the main drive to the junction of Modilon General Hospital and the three-line store. Following day, they continued along the main drive from Red Scar restaurant past Tusbab Secondary School and stopped at the Modilon General Hospital.
“The place will not change itself, but the people can to lure tourist and more visitors,” Kumura said.
“Madang was once known as the “Pearl of the Pacific” but today, there is a lot of littering of plastic bags, tin cans and other forms of rubbish everywhere in town. The once famous drive along the beach from the famous Kalibobo Light House to Tusbab beach is flooded with trash almost everywhere, even along the Madang Golf Course, which is embarrassing.”
Members of team Kumura are pre-dominantly ambitious young men.
