Newcrest team trains to lift safe practices in workplace

NEWCREST Lihir’s crane and rigging team recently celebrated the success of their “edge initiative”.
This was marked by the presentation of bags, caps and shirts to all employees and business partners involved in the project.
Newcrest in a statement said the edge initiative was about improving and having safe work practices and to cut costs.
The crane and rigging team developed the crane dispatch system which now enables a safe and direct communication between the crane operators and riggers without interruption.
It also provided training for more flexibility and up-skilled employees such as Evelyn Singas to excel as a crane dispatcher.
Singas is the only female crane operator and a valued team member.
In addition, there has been a reduction on non-compliance from 20 per cent to 4 per cent during shut-downs and zero per cent during a normal week. The morale of the team has also improved significantly, bringing a real sense of pride.
According to the company, these reflected Newcrest’s “continuous efforts in improving the business and delivering superior returns from finding, developing and operating as a
ompetent mine in PNG and in the region”.
The initiative has strengthened the company’s three most important pillars of safety, performance and people.
