PAPUA New Guinea will support Singapore’s bid to become a member of the International Civil Aviation Organisation assembly council.
The assurance was given by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to his Singaporean counterpart Lee Hsien Loong.
The organisation (ICAO) is a UN agency mandated as the global forum for civil aviation safety, security and navigation regulation.
The request was relayed to O’Neill by the non-resident High Commissioner of Singapore to PNG Chaly Mah Chee Keong in Port Moresby.
Although PNG and Singapore are ICAO members, PNG is a category III member while Singapore is a category II member.
“The PNG government extended similar support to the Singapore government in 2010 when Singapore sought to become a member of the part II of the ICAO council. So, I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t support Singapore,” O’Neill said.
The high commissioner was impressed with the upgraded Jackson International Airport facilities and the number of new roads and infrastructure in Port Moresby.
PNG and Singapore formalised relations on May 19, 1976.
