The Pharmaceutical Society of PNG for the first time celebrated World Pharmacist Day that was founded in 1912 by the International Pharmaceutical Federation.
The day falls on Sept 25 and  yesterday it coincided with the “Walk for Life”, a Sunday-morning walk to promote healthy life style initiated by Walk and Yoga for Life and supported by the National Capital District.
“We used the opportunity to market the profession, get a bit of understanding. The idea is to get people to approach us as health professionals,” Monica Turwai, PSPNG’s secretary, told The National.
She said for primary health issues such as flu and skin disease, it was not necessary to queue up in hospital but the local pharmacy should be able to do the job instead.
Health Secretary Pasco Kase told  participants for Walk for Life that pharmacists came under the Health Department and played important roles of controlling drugs in terms of quality and standard.
He said pharmacists also played important roles in providing primary healthcare in community pharmacies.
