Sorcery cases on the rise: Turi

SORCERY related killings are on the rise in the National Capital District, according to Met Supt Benjamin Turi.
He told The National yesterday that more awareness was needed on the issue.
“Such case normally happens in a village between certain cultural groups where families accused themselves over sorcery related issues and sometimes it results in deaths,” Turi said.
He raised this concern following two killings last weekend.
In the first incident at Buswara settlement at Nine-Mile last Friday a man from Eastern Highlands was accused by his family for practicing sorcery. Turi said some of the relatives went to the settlement and tried to kill him but police intervened.
He said in the second incident at Badili yesterday two people were confirmed dead.
He said their bodies were found inside their house after they were allegedly killed by their relatives who suspected them of sorcery.
The deceased were from Eastern Highlands.
Turi said six suspects involved were arrested and were in police custody.
He added that police were continuing investigations and were expected to make more arrests.
“Sorcery related killing are on the rise now. It is the case that involves people within a family attacking each other. It is happening in a little tribe from Eastern Highlands that resides in the city,” Turi said.
He said there was no law on such cases.
“It is straight forward murder because they are not doing it in their village but in the city,” he added.
