THE University of Technology in Lae needs K40 million before classes resume for the second semester, according to acting Vice Chancellor Dr Ora Renagi.
He said the university has used most of its “operation” funds on projects required to prepare for the resumption of classes after the students’ unrest in June and July. They included the construction of a temporary mess to replace the dining hall and kitchen burnt down, security operations and renovations to damaged dormitories.
“We are yet to receive the K40 million as promised by the Government and the university is continuing talks with relevant government departments for the funds,” he said.
Renagi said Semester One ended successfully last Monday.
Unitech plans to develop a township in its campus to include a technological hub, a multipurpose hall, research facilities and real estate.
“The Government has challenged Unitech to raise internal revenue to supplement its budget. Therefore,  we are planning to partner with the Government and private companies to use Unitech’s abundant land for development,” he said.
He commended the university security, Lae police and Guard Dog Security for working together with the management and other sections of the university to boost security at the Lae campus.
