MEMBERS of the public in Port Moresby were given free eye and blood sugar tests during World Diabetes Day in Port Moresby yesterday.
PNG Diabetes Association president Dr Lutty Amos said it was the largest diabetes campaign throughout the world, commemorated annually by the 151 countries registered under the International Diabetic Federation.
Amos said the PNG association, founded in 1999 by Lady Carol Kidu, wanted to increase awareness on diabetes, provide prevention messages, improve medical care and access to diabetes education by people with diabetes.
“With diagnosis, many go through a process of denial. When you go to the clinics, they are not giving you the information that you require because there is a whole long list of people waiting there. You need to link up with someone and talk about your illness.”
She said they aimed to create an avenue for people to seek assistance and advice.
