Cop killed, student axed a sign of lawless society

Letters, Normal

LAST week’s murder of a policeman and the hacking of a law student are disgusting and make people think that PNG is a lawless and weak society.
When the foreign media, for example, ABC news reported “Cop shot dead in busy Port Moresby” (Oct 8), they are also disseminating such news to the rest of the world that PNG is a crime-ridden country.
Where are our politicians when we need them?
I appeal to the MPs to quickly recall parliament and declare a state of emergency in Port Moresby, Lae and Mt Hagen.
They must enforce the death penalty immediately.
If they are not serious, then PNG’s status as a Christian and democratic society will erode into an uncivilised state.
Death penalty is already a law, so why are we not enforcing it?
In the last term, government officers made overseas trips led by the then attorney-general to study how death penalty is executed.
What is the outcome of these trips?
It is a total waste of taxpayers’ money and resources if nothing were to eventuate.
Politicians must accept the reality facing our society and start adopting tougher laws to curb lawlessness.
If we fear other people criticising us about human rights, one day we will end up living in a state where there is no rule of law and respect for human lives.
The signs are already here.
Therefore, the PM must move to safeguard PNG.
Otherwise, his hard work to gain independence and promote the LNG project will end in tatters.
It is imperative to implement the death penalty, not only to reduce law and order, but to help PNG to achieve its goal of “a peaceful society” as declared in Vision 2050.
If there is no peace in society, how can we attain this goal under the prevailing law and order situation?
Moresby Northeast MP Andrew Mald’s view on the imposition of death penalty is encouraging.
Law and order is a cancer that will eventually kill our socio-economic and political development if our politicians lack will and guts to enforce the death penalty.
