THE mining township of Bulolo in Morobe came alive on Saturday during the annual Bulolo Show.
The show themed “Promote culture and agriculture to sustain our lives,” was held at the St Steven’s Primary School.
Hundreds from the six local level governments were joined by people from Lae and other districts.
Deputy chairman of the show Tonny McHarets said 15 cultural singsing groups, 10 string bands, five bamboo bands and 10 live bands took part.
“The main purpose is to promote culture and agriculture,” McHarets said.
“Bulolo is a district floating on gold and its people are busy finding gold. But what the MP (Sam Basil) is doing is to bring the people’s mind back to their culture and agriculture.”
McHarets said last year’s event lured many tourists. But no tourists attended this year because they received their funding late to advertise the show.
McHarets said the show was first held in 2011.
Local MP Sam Basil vowed to continue supporting the show next year but want the people to behave.
“We will continue to put more money into the show but you must behave.
We have other cultures in Bulolo but because of the distance they too cannot attend.”
McHarets estimated that more than 10,000 people attended the two day event.
He said the Bulolo District Development Authority was the main sponsor of the event with K222,000.
