Teachers graduate with certificates in business studies

SIXTEEN teachers from secondary and high schools in East Sepik province have graduated with a certificate in business studies last Friday.
The Know About Business (KAB) training is new in schools in the province and is said to be taught to Grade Nine students under the business studies subject beginning next year.
KAB is a training that understands the role of business in the society, its contribution to the wealth of the nation and its social responsibilities, entrepreneurial attitudes and behaviour to be informed on how an enterprise is functioning.
National Department of Education assistant secretary curriculum development division Dr Eliakim Apelis, while giving his keynote address, said KAB was specially designed to address the problem of high youth unemployment in the country.
He highlighted that statistics showed that 45% of school age children were not in school giving rise to unemployment situation.
He said with KAB lessons being implemented into the school curriculum, more youths would be able to consider self-employment as a career option to create enterprise culture for young people.
Dr Apelis said young people would have a positive approach to life when they were fully equipped with enough skills and information on how to conduct their own small scale business.
A female teacher participant said KAB programme was good for the children and to implement it, support must come from all concerned parties to see that its goals are achieved.
She challenged her colleagues to fully implement the programme in their respective schools so that children were taught the basics of business at an early age.
Meanwhile, Brandi Secondary School has been chosen as the venue for the roll-out programme on KAB.
