Trukai boss reveals progressive report and five-year plan

Trukai Industries Ltd has made significant progress and is on target to deliver Papua New Guinea’s largest rainfed rice crop in history, chief executive Greg Worthington- Eyre says.
Worthington-Eyre said Trukai would in the next five years bring into production 2000 hectares of rice. This is equivalent to 8000 tonnes of paddy grain.
Rice development manager Humphrey Saese said over 200 hectares of rainfed rice crop was currently planted which would be ready for harvesting in early May.
Trukai announced in August 2017 that it was working with a local land group in the Markham Valley to grow an additional 500ha of rainfed rice. Trukai is in the process of establishing a long-term lease of land for expansion.
Saese said the site at Umi in Markham would have a collection point with grain storage, loading equipment and staff compound to service current cropping and future expansion.
Trukai Industries is viewing expansion into high rainfall areas in the Huon Gulf district around Nadzab, Munum and Situm with pilot plots already being developed to test suitability of rice farming.
