D-Day looms as police get ready to take down units

THE condemned single quarters at the Gordon Police Barracks are to be demolished today, says Assistant Commissioner of Police NCD and Central Donald Yamasombi.
He said the blocks were condemned in 2015 by the NCDC health authorities and the tenants were being moved to new houses at Bomana – except for 15 officers and their families who were left behind because they didn’t have enough houses.
“An internal arrangement will be made for those 15 officers and their families who were left back from the original relocation plan,” Yamasombi said. “For the other tenants who moved in after the blocks were condemned and relocation was made, you will have to organise yourselves and come up with a name list and the name of the police station they are attached to.
“If you are attached to police headquarters or police stations around the city, we will find an alternative for you and your family.”
Yamasombi said the officers were part of the constabulary and they would find housing for them.
“We have to carry out the eviction as there are some civilians who are not police officers and some officers from outside provinces who have come to Port Moresby at their own discretion and living in the single quarters blocks. They have been using free water and electricity – that is causing the police huge utility bills,” he said.
“So they will be evicted (today) and the single quarters blocks will be demolished. “But we will provide an alternative for our officers who are attached to the NCD and Central Police Stations or attached to the Police Headquarters.”
