Teachers, parents repairing school damaged by quake

Highlands

Teachers and parents of a Primary School in Southern Highlands have started repairing their earthquake-damaged school instead of waiting for the government.
Karanas Primary School principal Philip Kapu said the earthquakes caused the grade 4 and 5 classrooms to crack, the grade 3 classrooms to sink into the ground and damaged the teachers’ houses.
“Upon the parents requests we have suspended classes for the lower primary (grade 3 and grade 5) but are continuing classes for the upper primary (grades 6, 7, 8),” Kapu said.
“Our students, their parents and teachers have taken an active role in rebuilding what was damaged.”
Kapu said the school and parents have bought materials for the repairs.
They would also rebuild the grade 3 classrooms.
“In times like this, we must stand as one people and help each other,” Kapu said.
