Woods eyes back-to-back titles at Morobe golf open

THE 2018 Morobe Open has a strong line up of professionals who contesting this year’s title at the Lae Golf Club.
The four-day event runs from April 19-22 and is expected to attract many visitors to the golf club.
Last year’s Morobe Open winner Chris Woods, 27, will be up against some of Australia’s best pros in Damien Jordan, Brad Rankin and Dale Brandt-Richards.
Woods’ Morobe Open win remains his most significant victory to date, taking out the A$110,000 (K277,257.00) Ladbrokes Pro-Am Series tournament.
Woods claimed the biggest win of his professional career holding off Michael Wright by two shots to win the open last year.
He was able to back that result up with a fourth place finish in the following week’s SP Brewery PNG Open, just three shots off the winner Cory Crawford.
Woods is yet to breakthrough for a professional victory on the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia, top-three results in the South Pacific Open and Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship his best results so far.
Jordan is another player to watch as he had a breakthrough year as a professional; he began the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia season in perfect fashion, winning the Victorian PGA Championship, the first tournament of the year.
A career-high finish of 24th on the Tour’s Order of Merit along with four top-10 finishes in 2017 also saw him nominated for the ISPS Handsa PGA Tour of Australasia Player of the Year.
The former Australian soldier finished in a tie for fourth in last year’s Morobe Open and tied 11th in the PNG Open sponsored by the South Pacific Brewery.
Rankin went down in a playoff to eventual champion Cory Crawford at last year’s SP Brewery PNG Open, that result his best to date so far on the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia.
He followed it up with a 6th place finish at the Isuzu Queensland Open and finished inside the top-30 at the Australian PGA Championship. – Australian PGA
