Students step behind the scenes to manage spelling competition

THIS year’s Em Stret Spelling Bee competition involves young students in activities other than just spelling.
The competition had students taking part in roles such as hosting the event and managing the stage.
Ten-year-old Chebbie Lin, from St Joseph International College, is helping host the event and 13-year-old Zenda Waliman, from Port Moresby International School, is ground manager.
These were witnessed in yesterday’s start of the three-day spelling competition in Port Moresby, with student representatives and teachers from 10 primary schools in NCD and Central. Director for Em Stret Holdings Ltd Vani Nades told those at the competition that they are working to improve and build student confidence in the country through school competitions like the Institute of Business School debate and the spelling bee.
Nades said they were working on making the competition nationwide like debates, however, that
would depend on funds and sponsorship.
Schools included in the spelling bee are Coronation Primary, Kilakila Primary, Koki Primary, Kopkop Primary, Port Moresby International Middle School, St John’s Tokarara Primary, Ted Diro Primary, St Joseph’s International College and Magauto Primary.
The competition started yesterday with juniors (grades 3 and 4).
It will continue today with the intermediate competition (grades 5 and 6) and will finish with seniors (grades 7 and 8) tomorrow.
