Gordon police barracks issues

Letters

OF all the police barracks in Port Moresby, the one situated in Gordon is the worst in NCD.
Particular attention is given to the section of the barracks opposite the closed Gordon market and within the vicinity of the Gerehu-Waigani bus stop as this section is a breeding ground for thuggery and crime.
This may cause one to question the role of the barracks commander and also the policemen living there as they are the face of the law and should be proactive in policing their immediate community as part of their normal duty.
It is also noted that even the policemen’s sons drink alcohol and disturb the peace within the barracks community. They also harass commuters.
But it’s not only the policemen’s sons who are being a nuisance, it’s also the extended familymembers they are illegally harbouring in their homes.
Strictly by the letter of the law, any child over the age of 18 is considered vagrant and ought to leave the house. Also the houses are strictly meant for the immediate family members of the police officers and their legal partners.
Finally, there’s the problem of small markets in and around the barracks area itself. I know it’s a way for wives to earn extra cash but these markets are growing out of control and they also sell of barbequed food which can pose health risks.
This is supposed to be a residential area and not a place of business.
The responsible authorities and the police officers living at the Gordon police barracks should look into these issues and restore law and order there.
