THE BSP Women’s National Snooker Titles cued off yesterday with competitiors taking place at three venues in Port Moresby.
May Vare, who made the semifinals last year, took on newcomer Claire Matai at the Lamana Q Club.
Vare beat Matai 2-0 in the first round and will meet Vaine Gavera tonight.
Vare said she was pleased with her start and was looking to string more wins and hopefully go further into the tournament for a playoff berth.
Vare commended her opponent Matai for a good challenge and said she was happy with her form in the opening hit-out.
Vare said she had been taking part in competitions over the last few months and she was confident that would serve her well at the national women’s titles.
“I know that title challenge was very competitive last year and it will be very challenging this year as well with some of the best players back on board,” Vare said.
“I’m not going to back down on them this time.
“I’ve set my target and hope to reach the finals this time and I’m looking forward to the challenges over the week.”
Tournament director Joe Chan said the women were playing a best-of-three frames round-robin format until Saturday when they move into the finals where they would play a best-of-five frames.
Chan said 40 women were divided into eight groups of five according to handicap and ranking.
