LETTERS IN BRIEF

Temai support:
At last the battle is over and people from either side must contribute and discus a way forward on how we can meaningfully contribute to Chimbu’s progress. Michael Temai is well qualified and has been contributing to the province. We have confidence in him to lead the public servants. He is a Chimbu son who has been in the province through thick and thin. Mr Governor, now we have faith in you so we are at peace.

Con man walking:
I am warning the people of NCD of a con man claiming to be a recruitment officer. He will not give his company details or address until you meet with him and present him with the bank deposit details after you have made the deposit he requires. He will assure you of an immediate security guard job if you deposit K200 into his BSP bank account and call him back with the deposit slip details.

Which way, Pence?
EM TV’s live broadcast of the Apec business leaders’ meeting on Saturday, Nov 17, showed US Vice-President Mike Pence, after speaking, exiting to the right of the stage. Straight away he was led back to the stage by security officers, led past the podium and out on the right of the stage, to the amusement and applause of the leaders. Is this how we treat the vice-president of the world’s most powerful nation? Then on Sunday, EM TV replayed the video, but the Pence drama was replaced by a commercial. We cannot hide this.

Man of the people:
Except for Moresby North-East MP and Minister for Housing and Urbanisation John Kaupa, I hardly see our MPs parking their vehicles at roadside markets or at other public places here in Port Moresby. Kaupa will leave his comfort zone and tinted vehicle to mingle with people and share soft drinks, cigarettes and betel nuts. These are lasting memories which will see him cruise home in 2022. A person who shares will have plenty to eat in times of need. Thank you JK for the can of Pepsi.

Bad coal:
The proposal by Mayur Resources Enviro Energy Park to boost electricity supply in Lae with the use of coal is being assessed by PNG Power as stated by Public Enterprise and State Investment Minister, William Duma, who also stated that there is support from both the Morobe and Gulf governments as well as the Conservation and Environment Protection Agency. I cannot comprehend the reason behind the support for this project when the effects of global warming are dominating the news headlines. Coal mining is destructive and will only add to the devastating effects of global warming. There are vast sources of renewable energy in this country that are health and environmentally friendly.
