NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop aims to set up an independent committee to run the annual Governor’s Cup tournament in Port Moresby in 2019 and subsequent years.
Second Secretary to Governor and NCD technical and vocational education training coordinator Simon Nichodemus made the remarks to the officials of the Morata Rugby League and Port Moresby Suburban Rugby League competition on behalf of Governor Parkop during the presentation of trophies to the 2018 Governor’s Cup winners at Kone Tigers Oval last Saturday.
“Governor wants to run the tournament more professionally which means he wants a setup comprising professional and senior rugby league coordinators who can manage and run the tournament more prudently,” Nichodemus said.
“Governor Parkop’s office wish to see the participating teams to have proper structure in the years to come as it will not only reflect the team but the city as whole.
“Because the tournament is staged here in the nation’s capital Governor Parkop wants a better tournament that will also reflect positvely on the city,” he added.
Nichodemus said Parkop would commit to funding the Governor’s Cup for the long term if its management structure was organised.
“Governor also said that the finals of the Christmas Cup would be played at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium annually.”
