Tribal fight a disaster

Letters

THE death toll of 33 in the ongoing tribal fight in Sugu Valley in Kagua Erave is an absolute disaster in this day and age.
It is unacceptable in any given term.
We have an elected government at various levels and institutions including law enforcement agencies and allowing this to happen for up to 3-4 months is well beyond and against the norms of any civilised society.
Somebody out there in the echelon of power should take responsibility for this and answerable. It is indeed history, 33 deaths in one particular area butchered or hacked to death.
I am sure many of them have died in the crossfire and at no fault of theirs and could have been prevented, if there was early intervention.
We are talking about human beings, precious lives and not wild animals or savages. It appears we are back in the stage age era where there is no rule of law.
These people whoever they are or whatever stages they are in, they must be guaranteed lawful protection enshrined under the PNG Constitution in this kind of situation. That protection they deserve has been lacking for the last four months that is insane. Is this the future of the black richest Christian country on planet earth?
These people need protection like any other PNG citizens now and the state has failed miserably to deliver that.
Taking back PNG has been the hallmark of the new government and here we have 33 precious lives butchered.
Taking back PNG starts here with prevention of more loss of lives and coming up with solutions to stop this madness. Relevant authorities that are empowered and mandated to attend to this kind of situation has failed in their duty of care and passing the buck.
This is criminal in nature. The 33 deaths are far too many and this is not a war zone. This has occurred over a three to four month period while there is a Southern Highlands police commander backed up by the Highlands divisional commander with manpower and resources available at their fingertips.
Those two senior police offers need to explain how 33 people are dead.
The situation continues to deteriorate and totally out of control and more unarmed people, woman, children and the elderly are at high risk of been butchered in the cross fire and continue to suffer and the number of deaths will keep on increasing if nothing is done.
Sugu Valley and Kagua Erave falls under their radar or area of operation.
A plan of action should have been drawn up when the problem erupted and put on ice quickly utilising all available resources.
To date that has not occurred. Law enforcement agencies swear an oath to protect citizens of this country from aggression and to safeguard lives and properties from wilful damage and apprehend lawbreakers and bring them to the court of law.
That is their bread and butter. Sugu Valley hosts couple of educational institutions and medical facilities funded by the taxpayers.
They need to be protected. There is a total ignorance by institutions of the government and heads must roll.
The police commissioner and the police minister are call upon to examine the duty statement and role of PPC Southern Highlands and Highlands divisional commander.
They lack vision and wisdom to address these issues of this magnitude. The elected MP for Kagua-Erave should take this matter up to the highest level and seek assistance for a favourable outcome ASAP.
These two officers must be terminated and criminally accountable for 33 deaths. Unfortunately, it is regrettable tribal fights are in the blood in highlands provinces.
Law enforcers have attended hundreds of tribal fights in their career in all forms in the past.
From those experiences have the law enforcers and their network come up with consistency plans and strategies to combat tribal fights for a win-win situation for a better outcome?
From the Sugu Valley scenario, we have a long way to go as they appear to be lost, lack direction, command and control. In “real countries”, a commission of inquiry would be warranted to establish why this brutality was allowed to continue and claim the lives of 33 people.
Heads would roll and those entrusted with the responsibility to curb this lawlessness held accountable including prison term.
In this country, the loss of 33 lives is just another tribal fight and who cares life goes on.
Is this the way things going to be in the black richest Christian country on planet earth?
The community leader from the neighbouring tribe Maita Yawi has done a remarkable job as a concerned citizen.
He has been in the forefront since the crises started, you an icon mate, well done for your efforts.
Yawi’s efforts will be rewarded some day; your reward in Heaven is much greater then what you can imagine.
It is people like you who give hope to the unfortunates and disadvantaged.
If there were four or five or more Maita Yawis out there, I have no doubt whatsoever peace and harmony will dwell in Sugu Valley.
