THE Parliamentary Appointment Committee has started the process of screening the eight applicants for the position of Clerk to Parliament.
Committee chairman and Hela Governor Philip Undialu told The National that the law required that a separate process run parallel to the Speaker’s office on the selection “so it doesn’t have to be combined with the Speaker’s office”.
The committee began deliberating on the eight applications yesterday.
“The Speaker on the other hand has appointed Vanguard International to assist him,” he said.
“(Our) committee decided that we will appoint an independent human resource recruitment team to give us a short list of the preferred candidates,” he said.
The committee and the speaker’s office will have separate lists to submit to the National Executive Council (NEC).
“Cabinet will decide the final three, then confirm one and send the name to the Governor-General for the final approval and gazettal,” he said.
“We know the importance of our committee.
“We don’t want to rush the appointment of the clerk because it is an important function of Parliament and we want to do it thoroughly.
“We want the most qualified person to occupy the position.
“What we do is independent and transparent.” Meanwhile, Undialu said the committee had endorsed the three shortlisted candidates for the position of Police Commissioner submitted by the Public Services Commission.
“Our process is part of the consultation and we endorse the list provided by the commission before it is submitted to Cabinet for selections and submission to the Governor-General.”
