District gets road help with fuel

Barrick Niugini Ltd will be helping to provide fuel to the Wabag District Authority (WDA) to upgrade and properly establish the Wabag-Maramuni road.
This assistance will also cater for the construction and expansion of other important roads in the district.
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between the operator of the Porgera mine and WDA recently.
Barrick country director Dr Ila Temu and Wabag MP and Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources Dr Tom Lino signed the MoU in Port Moresby on Oct 15.
Barrick agreed under the MoU to provide fuel for the next six months on roadwork machinery being used to construct and upgrade the roads.
Temu pointed out the importance of infrastructure such as roads and bridges, adding that roads were critical for service delivery and transportation for people in the districts.
Lino was grateful for the fuel assistance and said that the support would help WDA complete road works in the district
He said the Wabag-Maramuni road was an important infrastructure that linked the isolated people of Maramuni to Wabag.
He said currently the WDA was building five new roads.
