CAN the administration of all Government universities clamp down on the unruly behaviour that is reported by students in those campuses?
There is currently a hot topic on social media about the lockdown directives and how students are responding to that.
It was claimed by a number of students that some male students are using the lockdown period to party with loud music at the UPNG Waigani campus.
Some of us former students of this top institution who is sponsoring relatives studying there, cannot understand that the so-called “premier university” of the Pacific is entertaining such selfish behaviour on campus.
We are also concerned as taxpayers of this nation.
Is the administration at UPNG aware of that?
If so, what are they doing about it?
Such unruly behaviour and socialising by students defeat the purpose of a lockdown, which has the chief goal of preventing the spread of the dreaded coronavirus (Covid-19).
If this kind of behaviour continues, the lives of others on campus are going to be threatened too, in regards to the virus.
The university should be a place where students learn how to lead the nation in the future and not act as if the halls of residence are squatter settlements in the city where there is partying, consumption of alcohol and disturbance of all sorts every day.
To think that these students were chosen out of tens of thousands to attend the University of PNG is unbelievable.
Is it possible that there are outsiders living on campus and
promote such behaviour influencing students with such primitive culture instead of an intellectual culture that we all hope to
see in the future leaders of this nation?
Another person on social media said such unruly and disrespectful behaviour was also observed in the universities at Lae and Goroka.
Can the administration of those two universities also do something about it?
I am sure the security units on campus already have reports sitting there in their log books.
But what is the administration of those universities doing about such primitive behaviour?
Unruly behaviour that is not controlled over time can erupt into disasters of different kinds too.
We should be aware of that.
As a former student of two government universities, I know this will be regrettable for students, their guardians and the university if this such behaviour continues to grow.
Please, university administration, act to prevent possible disasters in the future.
Walk down to the different halls of residence and villages and see what is happening in the night.
Are the students studying or turning government campuses into party venues?
Partying itself is not helping in the bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Take action.

  • Identify those primitives and send them back to where they came from and allow other to take teir space.

  • Many out there with attitude and responsible behavior are struggling outside to get in there. Does this mean UPNG is producing brains with corrupt attitudes for more white-collar crime?
