Records irrelevant, says reigning champions City

LAE City may have won five straight titles but the reigning champions say records are irrelevant as they look to make up ground in the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League (NSL).
The Bob Morris-coached side are second on the ladder with seven wins, two draws and a loss after 10 rounds of the regular season.
Second-placed City have a favourable run-in with only two of their remaining eight regular-season matches against top-four opposition (Hekari United and ladder leaders Vitiaz United).
But Morris told The National yesterday that he wasn’t taking anything for granted ahead of the NSL restart on Saturday following a four-month hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It’s a new-look side but the team spirit and confidence is there,” he said. “We don’t want to dwell on records.
“We want to set new goals and achieve them.”
Morris said City’s aim was to ensure each player contributed to the team in every game.
“This way, the team performance will not be affected if a player is unavailable due to injury or other reasons,” he said.
“City are made up of experienced players and a few youngsters.
“There’s no doubt that the team have what it takes to reach another level.
“Ronald Warisan and Jacob Sabua have returned to the side after walking out on the club earlier this year.
“Obviously, the pair are senior players so they will add depth and experience to the side.
“The future looks good.”
