Leave land as it is

Letters

A PARCEL of land lies between the Angau Memorial Hospital and the roundabout road leading up to the top town/Morobe government headquarters’ buildings, is part of the special purpose lease to the Morobe government.
This land accommodates its offices and the governor’s residence.
In recent weeks, there has been some backfilling done within this property.
I doubt the Morobe government is behind this proposal.
Was the approval given in a legal way?
Please leave the land as it is.
I heard through the grapevine that there is a proposal for a fuel station to be set up here, which is against the special purpose lease to the Morobe government.
The initial proposal by this developer to the Morobe physical planning board was rejected, citing ownership and zoning as reasons.
But it seems the developer was dissatisfied with this decision and decided to circumvent the process and sought the assistance of the Lae City Authority, which in turn had illegally given the go ahead to backfill this area.
This is one clear example of a number of corruptive and dubious land deals that had been happening in Lae in recent years.
I strongly urge the Morobe government to immediately put a stop to this illegal development and investigate it.
