THE race for the two top spots in the Northern Conference Women’s National Soccer League is wide open after mixed results over the weekend.
Competition leaders Poro FC (on 24 points) maintained No.1 spot with a 7-0 drubbing of Rainy Lae at Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium on Saturday.
Leading goal scorer and captain Meagan Gunemba led from the front with four goals.
The opening exchanges were competitive as Rainy Lae matched Poro with their enthusiasm but the tide soon turned once Gunemba found open pace and got her timing right.
Rainy Lae’s defence began to fall apart as Daisy Takolu scored Poro’s second goal in the 25th minute followed by Gunemba with her second goal for a 3-0 lead at halftime.
The second half was one-way traffic with Gunemba, Takolu and Raynath Samuel adding four more goals to run out winners.
Rainy Lae’s Mckelyn Hendigao, Michelle Howi, Vivian Jerry, Yasap Ganu and Shallom Amos toiled hard in a beaten side but their execution was off as they missed several opportunities at goals.
In Madang, Tusbab Laidamon did not disappoint their fans as they beat Bara 2-1.
Results: Poro 7 Rainy Lae 0, Morobe Tulips 1 Pacific Gardens 0, Markham Raings 0 Sepik 3, Tusbab Laidamon 2 Bara 1.
