ATHLETICS Papua New Guinea’s (APNG) Grand Prix Series, which was scheduled to be held in Port Moresby next week, has been postponed until further notice due to the Covid-19.
The one-day series is for outdoor field and track events where athletes score points based on their performances.
APNG said in a statement that due to the current situation in the nation’s capital with restrictions on the size of gatherings as well as the closure of sporting facilities, the series would not take place at this time.
“We can’t run these competitions at present because travel is very difficult at the moment, especially with the requirement to show a negative Covid-19 test result. We will continue to monitor the situation and consider alternative ways to provide competition opportunities at this difficult time,” it said.
“In the meantime, we urge all the national squad athletes to improvise and find ways to maintain regular training.”
The series was supposed to see athletes travelling in for competition, some of whom include the Kerowagi-based distance training squad who have been training for the World Cross Country Championships and Mini Pacific Games next year.
Elite PNG athletes such as sprint sensation Toea Wisil and retired athlete Nelson Stone have competed in the Asian Grand Prix Series.
