PAPUA New Guinean women can now have access to improved facilities and opportunities at the Ukarumpa training centre in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands.
This follows the opening and dedication of a double-storey women’s dormitory and a dining hall recently.
The women’s dormitory in particular, was co-funded by PNG Sustainable Development Programme Ltd (PNGSDP) for K250,000 while, both the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) and Wycliffe Associates contributed K189,000 for the project.
The new facility will encourage more women’s participation at the Ukarumpa training centre and certainly boost SIL’s effort as it continues to provide language, literary and other associated skills training for both men and women in the country.
The SIL has been in the country since 1956.
It has been primarily involved in the task of Bible translation and language development.
Some of SIL’s achievements include the completion of about 194 New Testament translations and other publications.
The SIL is currently working on about 200 language translations.
Director of SIL PNG Tim Lithgow made those remarks recently during the commissioning of the new building.
The funding support towards the women’s accommodation will increase women’s enrolments especially those from remote and rural areas to obtain skills.
 and increase knowledge.
