Red Cross boosts health services

HEALTH service delivery in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands, has been boosted by the International Committee Red Cross Mission in Papua New Guinea.
As part of its drive to reach out and help people in the country, Red Cross donated much needed dressing items to the Mt Hagen provincial hospital.
The items were packed in four boxes and handed over by three Red Cross representatives during a recent visit to the hospital.The donation was timely as shortage of drugs and essential items continues to be a problem at the hospital.The Red Cross was represented by the Port Moresby and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville health delegate Thomas Thorthauge, highlands delegate Nader Wahba and highlands’ field officer Molly Vaiang.
They were in Mt Hagen not only to donate the items, but to look around the hospital and get a better understanding of the services being provided and what they could do to help further.
They said the dressing items were donated to help the hospital provide a better service, especially in the accidents and emergency unit.They said the Red Cross Mission was concerned about health care for tribal fight victims and health facilities in trouble spots that had been burnt down or damaged.
They will tour the region and visit health
facilities., as well as talk to people to get their views on the health services being provided.
Western Highlands’ provincial health authority acting director curative health services, Dr Guapo Kiagi thanked the Red Cross for the timely donation that would now help to reduce surgeries.
He said the shortage of drugs and other items was a big problem faced by the hospital as it strived to provide adequate health care to patients as the major highlands referral hospital.
