THE Autonomous Region of Bougainville Rugby Football Union celebrated the country’s 37th Independence Day at the Hutjena ovals over the weekend.
ARBRFU hosted a rugby sevens tournament and drew clubs and youth from around the Buka township, nearby communities and new talent, especially from the Petats and an exciting new entry from the Tasman and Mortlock islands.
Hilasan from Petats and Te’moana from Bougainville’s Polynesian Isles brought about a sparking attacking flair in their first appearance, but the lack of experience in the technicalities of the game, especially in the contact area, saw them fall behind their more experienced oppositions.
The week before the finals will hopefully be time enough to sharpen these areas.
The ever resilient Hagan Pirates ended up at the top after the weekend, above Malasang Traders, Halia, West Coast Titans, Kubu Mustangs, Te’Moana, Hilasan 2 and Hilasan 1.

Bougainville Rugby Head Peter Tsiamalili said that the ongoing tournaments was again part of the unions drive to keep the interest and the game going, adding that it was encouraging now with the islands now keenly showing their interest and participating.
The finals will be completed this Friday, beginning with the quarter-finals and knockouts in the morning, semi-finals mid-morning, and final in the afternoon.
