Gerehu come good in National Capital soccer final

GEREHU Secondary School’s 18-year-old Sharon Babuda confidently slotted the deciding goal in a penalty shootout to beat favourites Bradlies 3-2 in National Capital soccer women’s grand final yesterday.
Deadlocked at 2-2, and with the grade 10 student stepped up to slot it past keeper Lily John.
Babuda said after scoring the goal that she was confident and aimed the kick to the left.
Gerehu Secondary should have won the final in extra five minutes when Bradlies player handballed but fullback and captain Elizabeth Tandoa missed the direct shot.
Both sides ended extra time goalless.
It was a dream come true for the students wining the inaugural premiership of the National Capital soccer competition.
It was an evenly contested affair as both sides were at their best and performed well.
The students, who took the field as underdogs, pushed the favourites all the way and defended stoutly.
Gerehu’s Lavinia Hola, Daphne Diliavi, Babuda, Masera Hola, Tandoa and Beverly Hola had to work overtime against Bradlies’ Barbara Agali, Thelma Kasau, Esther Gomora and Darknah Samson, who took shots at goal but were unlucky.
The majority of the players are members of Team NCD and the grand final would have served as a good preparation.
Association president Peter Lewete thanked NCD Governor Powes Parkop,  NCDC’s sports boss Kila Dick and City Pharmacy Ltd for supporting the youths in Gerehu.
