PROMOTING sports at the district level will contribute to nation building and will also unveil youths’ hidden talents that will change their approach to life.
District sports programmes will also help youths to engage themselves in living healthy lifestyles instead of engaging in social activities that will destroy them.
A young and aspiring female weightlifter, and gold medallist of the Team Western Highlands at the recent 4th PNG Games, Grace Enga, told The National that sports should be more focused in the rural areas.
She said this was where most of the countries population were and, therefore, most of the countries potential sports people were there too.
Twenty-one-year-old Enga, who comes from Mul district, said she did not know that she had the ability to represent her province until she joined weightlifting, thanks to her mentor and Mul district sports coordinator, Moses Auvita.
She said there were many young girls like her in other rural areas, and if given the backing, they would do the same.
Enga had trained for weightlifting under the guidance of Amos Wak, one of PNG’s weightlifting gold medallists beginning in April this year.
She took gold in the women’s 75kg weight lifting challenge and said she was ready to represent PNG when the opportunity arose.
She said she was proud of her achievement given the short term training she underwent.
Enga said sports had made her travel out of the province and was sure that there were many other enthusiastic young people in rural areas like her who could expose their hidden talents.
