IRC and provinces dialogue urged

THERE is a need for communication, understanding and dialogue between the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) and provinces in support of development initiatives.
“This is important so that the strict application of the PNG tax laws do not interfere with provincial development initiatives even before they get off  the ground,” East New Britain Deputy Governor Amos Niba said during IRC’s 50th anniversary celebration last Friday.
Mr Niba said while the IRC was progressing, there were continuing challenges that undermined the good work it did, including import of counterfeit products, price transfers, tax evasion and false declaration.
He said there was a need for more information-sharing and feedback from IRC to the provinces on the actual revenue generated to the general purse.
Mr Niba said this was important for incentives to the provinces to improve activities and ability to increase collectable taxes to the Government.
