Power for Buang village

 PEOPLE from the remote Buang local level government (LLG) in the Bulolo district, Morobe, can now use electricity.

Bugiau villagers in ward 1 of Buang LLG witnessed the start of electricity supply last Friday when opposition leader Belden Namah switched on the power.

Namah was invited by his deputy and local MP Sam Basil to officiate at the launching. 

The event was attended by people of Bugiau and surrounding villages who had been without power since independence. 

The rural electricity project was funded by the Bulolo district services improvement programme (DSIP).

It took PNG Power several months to build the facility with power supplied by the Baiyune hydro scheme, which also supplies Bulolo station and surrounding areas. 

Namah told the people that electricity was important for their development and they must take care of it.

“Services don’t reach us because we ask for too much compensation. I appeal to you not to ask for compensation,” Namah said.

Namah said the country needed radical leadership to provide services in rural areas and his team was ready to do that if they formed government.

Basil said this was the first of a series of projects and he would ensure all other parts of his electorate receive power supply.

“Bugiau is the last village but is the first to get power,” he said.

Basil urged the people of Bugiau to make use of the electricity to better their lives.

“I expect the level of production to increase. Buy computers for your children and teach them to use it.”
