ANOTHER modern fish cannery will be built at Malahang in Lae.

Fisheries Minister Mao Zeming yesterday officiated at the ground-breaking ceremony to launch the multi-million kina fish cannery to be owned by Nambawan Seafood Corporation Ltd.

The event coincided with the opening of the Majestic Seafood Corporation Ltd’s K78 million fish cannery, also in Malahang.

Zeming, the Tewai-Siassi MP, said investors were keen to invest in PNG because of the current stable political climate.

He added that the National Fisheries Authority had given more than half-a-million kina to the National Government since 2008 in terms of revenue.

“We have also being assisting the highlands provinces in fish farming projects,” he said.

Nambawan Seafood spokesperson Tang Dexter said they were ready to develop the project.

Morobe Governor Kelly Naru said he was proud that Morobe was a “nation within a nation” and had everything that investors needed.

“I welcome you to Morobe. The sky is the limit. We have enough space for everybody,” he said.

The tuna cannery will employ more than 1,000 locals and will compete with existing fish canneries owned by Majestic Seafood Corporation, International Food Corporation and Frabelle.
