Polye looks into ICT problems at universities

 THE Government realises there is a need to improve information and communication technology (ICT) facilities in  state universities to ensure more efficient information flow, the Acting Minister for Higher Education, Science and Research Don Polye says.

   He has been receiving requests and appeals from students, academics and the management from the four state institutions for better facilities to support more efficient dissemination of information and teaching and learning.

The four institutions – University of Papua New Guniea, University of Technology, University of Goroka and the University of Natural Resources and Environment – accept about 4,000 students each year.

“With a high number of enrolments, it is clear that these institutions need better information and communication technology,” Polye said in a statement.

“Upgraded internet access, band-width, computer and communication facilities.” 

Polye said he realised that some of the recent student frustrations were partly due to poor ICT facilities in the institutions.

He said possible funding for the facilities could come from budget savings or unexpected availability of money and he was in a good  position to see it through as the treasury minister.

The Government’s mid-term budget outlook was due next month, Polye said, hinting that money could become available then.
