Lae roads to get K100m annually

LAE city can expect K100 million every year until all its roads are fixed, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said last week when launching reconstruction work from the Bugandi intersection to the Wau-Bulolo junction.

It is a continuation of the Lae city roads upgrading project that started in 2011 with K170 million spent so far. The launching marked the national Government’s injection of another K100 million into the programme.

“I will continue to give Lae city K100 million every year until all its roads are completed to a very high standard,” O’Neill told a cheering crowd. 

He said he wanted no expanses spared and demanded top quality and high standard work.

“I want all roads in Lae to have concrete underneath and tar sealing on top,” he said.

“My government will closely monitor work on the roads and any contractor found to be providing substandard work will be blacklisted and never given another contract again in this country.”

O’Neill announced yesterday that his government had put aside K100 this year for the rehabilitation programme but they are waiting till proper and competent contractors are selected for the jobs.

He also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the Highlands Highway and the Lae Port expansion as key projects.
