FORTY students from Western Highlands and Jiwaka took part in the Institute of Business Studies nationwide school debate competition.

Students came from the seven high and secondary schools in Western Highlands and two secondary and a high school from Jiwaka.

The competition started last Tuesday and ended on Thursday, sponsored by IBS, the two provincial governments and the Rotary Club of Mt Hagen.

The debate took place at the Tega Assemblies of God (AOG) Church hall outside Mt Hagen city.

This year’s IBS school debate competition was described as better, with outstanding turnouts compared to last year when only four schools that took part.

Last year Notre Dame Secondary from Western Highlands represented the province in the IBS nationwide school debate competition in Port Moresby.

IBS quality assurance manageress Vani Nades said it is vital for schools to get together to expose and put into practice what they  learnt.

Western Highlands division of education guidance officer Ben Mallari said such a school debate competition was a way forward and it gave students enough courage to make public speeches.
