Back to 1960s . . .

National, Normal

Back to 1960s . . . Here  is a “human ambulance” transporting a sick man to the Pangia health
centre, a scene reminiscent of the 1960s and 1970s Southern Highlands when much of the frontier province was not yet connected by roads. Far from the LNG hype and scenes in PNG’s largely urban-centric media, here is a picture of a bygone era depicting what life is still like in the remote and rural areas of many parts of SHP and elsewhere. This elderly man from a remote village in Last Wiru was so sick that he could not walk the distance and so was stretchered by his younger siblings to the health centre last Dec 30.
