Pere sets standard … Villagers from Pere in Manus province heading towards a FAD (fish aggregation device) to fish. The device was provided by the National Fisheries Authority and was first introduced to the villagers during the launch of the Pere LMMA (locally-managed marine areas) management plan last Sept 3. The FAD is anchored out in the open sea where it attracts fish, with the aim it will lure fishermen away from fishing areas heavily exploited near Pere’s marine protected areas and allow those areas to become more productive. It is understood that this is the first for a coastal village in PNG to own and rely on a FAD. According to Pere villagers, the FAD has proved its purpose.
